Sage Uncensored is NOT a spoiler column and does not represent itself as such in any way. It is not intended to proved "new," "out-scooped" or otherwise groundbreaking material.  This column will discuss news, rumors and spoilers already in circulation, so if you are here to bitch that there is no new material, don't say you weren't warned.  Those of you who enjoy Sage and his writing will likely appreciate the column.  Those of you who are just here for your spoiler fix are probably in the wrong place.

For those of you who choose to continue on and share time with Sage,  welcome!

March 14, 2005

I felt your murmuring, I saw how restless you were and I sensed your need.  At last, here is Sage's own assessment and prediction list for the blah blah blah annual Daytime Emmy Awards!  A few preliminary disclosures before I wade into this beast:

1) I have never watched any soap other than ABC soaps with the exception of 10 minutes of Passions I watched purely to see Robin Strasser (if that brilliant diva isn't a fag hag, I might just cut my own wrists, bleed on the white shag carpet and call it avant garde).

2)  I hate award shows and all they represent and totally think they are biased, rigged. bought and paid for.  I am more than willing to suspend that ire and pretend that it's a legitimate process for the purpose of this column.

3)   I don't really have a frickin clue who's going to win.  I'm just using the list as an excuse to talk trash with you.

Those legal disclaimers being dispensed and done with, let's get down to talking some serious Emmy smack.  I gotta tell you thought, I'm taking the cat gloves off for this one and going for it, so this is a TRUE Sage Uncensored.  Rrroowllll!

Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

So this is the award for how the sets look.  You will notice that GH is not nominated and I am convinced that is because of that hideous Garden of Aphrodite set design with the nasty light up flowers and broken pottery arrangements.  Both OLTL and AMC do a decent job in this department, but I think the edge goes to AMC, even though they seem under the impression that the Pine Cone is a shitty little motel when obviously, they have never even see a shitty ass hotel in their time.  We have to forgive them, being from New York and wealthy and all.  I'm sure that the Pine Cone *looks* like slumming to them, just like I'm sure they thought we were convinced that Erica was kicking her way out of the dressing room and onto a real Atlantic City stage.  Um, yeah, whatever.

Outstanding Achievement for a Casting Director For A Drama Series

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

Casting.  Also known as "the great crap shot."  The perils of the casting couch aside, I can only, in this category, speak to Mark Teschner of GH and wow, that guy must have a curl right in the middle of his forehead because when he's good he's very, very good and when he's bad, we all want to stab ourselves in the eyes with olive forks.  Bringing us the unfortunate castings the likes of J Robin Miller in the re-cast Lydia (Miller is a great actress, but was hopelessly miscast and horribly misused), Brittany Powell as Summer (ditto the J Robin Miller comment), Angel Boris as Angel Ellis, Katie Stuart as the sadly recast Sage Alcazar, Ignacio Serracchio as Diego Sanchez, all of the Marias... I could go on, but why prolong the misery?

Then there are the winners he has cast, including the great prize, Lane Davies, as Cameron Lewis (the casting was amazing, but the writing killed him - literally).  Jed Allen has done a fine job as Edward Quartermaine #4 (ah, ah, ah!  Don't forget Les Tremayne!).  Tamara Braun is well liked as Carly by many.  Chad Brannon was amazing as Zander Smith.  Corbin Bernson is the perfect jewel to play Big Daddy John to the point that I personally cannot imagine anyone else playing him.  Mr Teschner has had some misses, but wow, he's had some dead on hits.

Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL  *  CBS

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

I don't know about CBS, but I know AMC rules when it comes to beautiful clothes, The Green Butterfly costume notwithstanding.

Outstanding Drama Series Directing Team

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

I should care.  I don't.  Stand over there, say it like this, it all is good stuff, but I can't find a particular edge on either AMC or GH.  I will say that I have noticed that when the name "Bill Ludel" comes up under the GH directing credits, it has been a crisper, cleaner, snappier show.

Outstanding Achievement in Multiple Camera Editing For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

DAYS OF OUR LIVES  *  NBC

PASSIONS  *  NBC

Pfft, whatever.

Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

Hair?  (You'll notice GH is not listed here)  I have to give this one to AMC as well. You know, there is a very good reason qhy AMC was nominated for more Emmy awards than any other show, drama or otherwise, with a total of 18.

Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

You'll also notice GH's distinct absence in THIS category.  Of course, AMC is my vote.

Outstanding Achievement in Main Title Design

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL  *  CBS

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

KATHRYN PEASLEE, TITLE DESIGNER

FABRICE MAUREL, TITLE DESIGNER

LIFE & STYLE  *  SYN

SOAP TALK  *  SOAPNET

I left the names under GH's nomination in the category, not only because it's so extremely frickin ludicrous that the piece of shit opening credits for GH are nominated, but also so you could view the names of the people responsible for that abomination.  Give me an epileptic seizure.  Show the men all dressed up at the end and the women... not there.  Totally screw up Dave Koz's beautiful song, "Faces of the Hearth" into some squeaky, squaky midi-file sounding, ear-bleed inducing, wha wha, Donald Duck, broken harmonica, migraine of mess.  Yeah, let's give THAT an Emmy.  I vote for AMC.  I absolutely love their opening credits and it does ample justice to the historical progression of the show.

Outstanding Achievement in Makeup For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

Once again, AMC gets the nod from me for make up.  I actually saw Dorian in pink blush and red lipstick the other day (*shudder*).  Coordinate, darlings, coordinate your palette!

Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction And Composition For A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

Sorry, AMC, got to give the music Emmy to OLTL.  They ace it every time, even if I'm kind of tired of hearing Kassie DePaiva sing.  She is a beautiful woman with a lovely voice, but like my heartthrob, Barry Manilow, she's a small doses kind of experience for me.  Any time Ilene Kristen opens her mouth to sing, I'm a happy guy.  Kathy Brier, well, of course.  Even Renee Goldsberry was shining this Valentine's Day.   Simply Red?  Simply Thrilled.  Hell, they even had the Chieftains on once!  When I think of AMC and music, all I can now hear in my head is Opal singing, "Bad Girls."  Lord help me.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

MARTHA BYRNE,  AS LILY SNYDE

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL  *  CBS

SUSAN FLANNERY,  AS STEPHANIE FORRESTER

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

NANCY LEE GRAHN,  AS ALEXIS DAVIS

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

KIM ZIMMER,  AS REVA SHAYNE LEWIS

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

ERIKA SLEZAK,  AS VICTORIA DAVIDSON

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

KASSIE DEPAIVA,  AS BLAIR CRAMER

PASSIONS  *  NBC

JULIET MILLS,  AS TABITHA LENOX

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

MICHELLE STAFFORD,  AS PHYLLIS SUMMERS ABBOTT

Susan Fannery seems to be a favorite and is a prior winner.  Erika Slezak may get the veteran nod.  Susan Lucci isn't even nominated this year.  In fact, it's an AMC lock out.  Honestly, I'd like to see Nancy Lee Grahn take it.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

MICHAEL E. KNIGHT,  AS TAD MARTIN

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

ROGER HOWARTH,  AS PAUL RYAN

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL  *  CBS

JACK WAGNER,  AS DOMINICK PAYNE MARONE

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

STEVE BURTON,  AS JASON MORGAN

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

GRANT ALEKSANDER,  AS PHILLIP SPAULDING

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

CHRISTIAN JULES LEBLANC,  AS MICHAEL BALDWIN

It's a really, really hard choice, but between Michael E. Knight and Steve Burton, I'd have to give Knight the edge.  No, I can't.  Steve Burton was awesome when Samantha lost her baby.  Crap.  I can't decide.  They have both done great work this year.  But I also have an affinity for Roger Howarth, even though I've never watched him on ATWT.  I dunno.  Flip a coin.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

NATALIA LIVINGSTON,  AS EMILY QUARTERMAINE

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

ROBIN CHRISTOPHER,  AS SKYE QUARTERMAINE

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

CRYSTAL CHAPPELL,  AS OLIVIA SPENCER

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

HEATHER TOM,  AS KELLY BUCHANAN

ONE LIFE TO LIVE  *  ABC

ILENE KRISTEN,  AS ROXANNE BALSOM

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

JEANNE COOPER,  AS KATHERINE CHANCELLOR

Stunned horror pretty much describes it. Heather Tom turned in a lot of emotional work this year, as did Natalia Livingston, but I consider both to be a far cry away from being Emmy worthy.  I'm fairly shocked to even see them here.  Ilene Kristen is simply the best ever, but has been given so little material that it's hard to believe she's here either.  Robin Christopher had a good sized maternity leave in the year.  Curiouser and Curiouser.  If we are dealing purely in acting talent, which for me is where the rubber actually hits the road, I'd go with Robin Christopher.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

JEFF BRANSON,  AS JONATHAN LAVERY

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

CAMERON MATHISON,  AS RYAN LAVERY

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

TYLER CHRISTOPHER,  AS NIKOLAS CASSADINE

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

RICK HEARST,  AS RIC LANSING

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

JUSTIN DEAS,  AS BUZZ COOPER

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

GREG RIKAART,  AS KEVIN FISHER

Jeff Branson comes off as wooden and stiff on screen.  Cameron Mathison is a wonderful actor, but sometimes seems to chew up the scenery around him.  Tyler Christopher is OK, but sometimes either far to subdued or seriously into weird overkill (Conner Bishop) and wow, that accent was just all the hell over the place.  I would have preferred he "found" the character before bringing him onscreen.  All in all, I've got to give it to Rick "HE'S SO HOT SO HOT DID I MENTION HE'S HOT" Hearst.

Outstanding Younger Actress In A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

ALEXA HAVINS,  AS BABE CHANDLER

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

EDEN RIEGEL,  AS BIANCA MONTGOMERY

AS THE WORLD TURNS  *  CBS

JENNIFER FERRIN,  AS JENNIFER MUNSON

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

ADRIANNE LEON,  AS BROOK LYNN ASHTON

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

CRYSTAL HUNT,  AS LIZZIE SPAULDING

I would love, love, love, love to see Adrianne Leon take it.  I'd pay money to see Adrianna Leon.  I think Eden Riegel will get it based on the strength of the vast selection of material she had for the Emmy reel submission.

Outstanding Younger Actor In A Drama Series

ALL MY CHILDREN  *  ABC

JACOB YOUNG,  AS JR CHANDLER

GENERAL HOSPITAL  *  ABC

SCOTT CLIFTON,  AS DILLON QUARTERMAINE

GUIDING LIGHT  *  CBS

TOM PELPHREY,  AS JONATHAN RANDALL

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

DAVID LAGO,  AS RAUL GUITTIEREZ

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS  *  CBS

MICHAEL GRAZIADEI,  AS DANIEL ROMALOTTI

If Jacob Young gets it for a second time, I will know it's rigged.  Scott Clifton deserves it, but got crappy material.  Meh.  Don't care.

Outstanding Talk Show Host

DR. PHIL  *  SYN

DR. PHILLIP C. MCGRAW, HOST

THE ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW  *  SYN

ELLEN DEGENERES, HOST

LIVE WITH REGIS & KELLY  *  SYN

REGIS PHILBIN, KELLY RIPA, CO-HOSTS

SOAP TALK  *  SOAPNET

LISA RINNA, TY TREADWAY, CO-HOSTS

THE VIEW  *  ABC

BARBARA WALTERS, JOY BEHAR, ELISABETH HASSELBECK, STAR JONES, MEREDITH VIEIRA, CO-HOSTS

I put this in just because I was shocked to see Soap Talk here.  I've only ever seen one episode of it because Lisa Rinna made me want to hang myself in the oven after shooting myself in the gut with a poison bullet.  I can't believe they're nominated.  Am I the only one who thinks she should be working behind a make-up counter at Macy's and not propping up the hottest man to ever be on TV?  HUH?

(pssst... I vote for Dr Phil)

I have never seen an episode of ATWT, but I am going to give it my vote on reputation alone rather than even pretending that GH being here isn't proof that this whole deal is a set up.  I mean, what a complete joke.

And that's my gig for this week, folks.  Take care and have a stunning week, my darlings.

Much love,

Note:  Sage gets a fat ton of mail every day and regrets he can't answer everyone personally.  He loves ya, he just might not get a chance to write to ya!  Besides, he writes to you every week in a column whether you write to him or not!  Needless to say, if you are an asshole, he just for sure isn't going to write back.  If you're inclined to writing hateful things, pretend he wrote back and said, "That's just like, your opinion, man."

If your writing to ask about future storyline happenings, figure he answered, "Pfft, I dunno."  Sage truly does not have info on upcoming storylines except what is posted on the EOS Spoiler Commentary pages!
