January 12, 2004 I would like to give a quick FYI on the Best and Worst of 2003 series that has been the focus of this week's column(s). First, yes, these are just my opinions and are not intended to reflect the opinions of any of the other EOS writers or particularly not every ABC soap fan in our readership. I'm comfy with the idea that some of our readers will have different and conflicting ideas. It would be really, really scary if no one did. The choices were limited to what actually happened on screen in 2003. That means news and rumors that did not affect our onscreen viewing were not included. Now, before going on to the rest of the column here is the last of the Best and Worst columns, the Best and worst of:
Now, on to the regular Monday column: ABC Is everyone getting heavy on the new contest from The View to have breakfast with a soap star? You could be sitting across a grapefruit from one of three hot soap hunks! Write a 50 word essay about why you should be the winner and you could win yourself roundtrip airfare for two to New York City, two nights hotel accommodations, breakfast with Cameron Mathison, Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio from OLTL) or Ted King (Lorenzo from GH), spa treatments with View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck and two tickets to attend The View. Not too shabby. Click here for more info. Have you seen this? http://www.soaphunks.net/ If not, you should. Beware... there are skinzies. (No eating, drinking, speaking, thinking, walking or leaving the computer monitor unattended) I figure it's my civic duty to make sure you folks have important sources like this. AMC
Ex-Noah, Keith Hamilton Cobb, (currently Damon on Y&R) is up for an NAACP award for outstanding actor in a daytime drama series. Since leaving AMC, Cobb has also starred in "Andromeda," a Sci-Fi series conceived by Star Trek's father, Gene Roddenberry.
Also this week, the murder investigation goes into high flurry in the wake of the recent subpoena servings (will that be one summons or two?). Seeing that Erica has been served stops Kendall from telling her the truth about which of her daughters is pregnant. Simone asks Mia for an alibi for the night of Cambias' murder. Reggie swears Kendall is innocent, which puts the spotlight on HIM as a prime suspect. Next week, a series of Michael Cambias nightmares move through some residents of Pine Valley. Like the endless droning of a talkative seatmate on an international flight, the Babe's Babe story continues its hapless meandering. JR attacks David and end up in jail, but after negotiating with Adam, David drops the charges. Jack and Erica are re-engaged for the 400th time. OLTL If you go to this link you will find wonderful screen shots of Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) with Ty Treadway (Troy on OLTL and ST regular host) on Soap Opera Network's "Soap Talk." Their intense chemistry is evidently not limited to OLTL (sadly, my cable company still does not carry SON) and fans are clamoring for CH to replace the very chipper, glossed and verbose current co-host, Lisa Rinna. By all accounts, it was quite a fun show.
Ethereal Megan, Viki's oldest daughter who died of Lupus related complications in 1992, will make another ghostly appearance on February 13th. Megan also appeared to sister, Jessica, when she lost her own baby, also named Megan, in 1999. Although no details have been made available at the time of this writing, it is expected that Megan will be involved in the death of Viki's comatose husband, Ben. Mark Derwin, who played Ben from 1999-2002, will be making a special reappearance to end the Ben story around the same time. Derwin currently co-stars with Bonnie Hunt in the popular sitcom "Life With Bonnie" and Tuck has appeared on the series "Judging Amy" since 1999 as Gillian Gray. In one of OLTL's most tear-jerking moments, new husband, Jake Harrison (played by Joe Lando), held up his dying wife, Megan to look out of the window one final time as she breathed her last breath in his arms.
MarcAl fans heaved a sigh of relief when the Al of the couple was granted a reprieve from death by way of a "Heaven Can Wait" story. Although we got the added benefit of the delightful Susan Batten, the story has draggggged along, never really seeming to know where it's going and making itself up as it goes along. There is growing concern about how the story will culminate on Valentine's Day when Al/Michael will either win Marcie's heart again in time or won't. All that is promised is that it will be a tearjerker. Like we all want to cry on Valentine's Day. Pfft. How about a little soft lighting, some, "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong" swelling and a field of daisies???
ABC asked Treadway to be open to staying longer than originally intended should the story need him around for an extended period of time.
Fan favorite, Timothy D. Stickney was nominated for the NAACP award for Best Actor in a Daytime Drama. The 35th annual awards show will be held on March 6 in the Universal Amphitheater outside Los Angeles. The ceremony airs March 11 on FOX (8:00 pm/ET).

"The fans of Eye on Soaps nominate Carolyn Aspenson from www.eyeonsoaps.com for her bravery in asking Ted King at the 2003 GH Fan Luncheon if his script from Sex and the City is true: If his penis really does look bigger when he shaves . Her bravery is respected by all of us!" Info on how to submit is at the above link under ABC. Oh, pfft, who loves you anyway? I'll reprint it for you here: Click for more info. Additionally, here is Carolyn's column on her special request of our EOS fans. Clickety Click. Just remember, she asked if it looks bigger... that's bold!
As many of you have read, specifically on TVguide.com, it's confirmed that John Ingle is remaining on the show. Although other sources have whispered that the return is on a recurring basis, there is no official comment on whether or not this is the case. Eye on Soaps welcomes "back" (although viewers would never have felt the rumble had they not been tuned into behind-the-scenes news) our favorite patriarch, Edward Quartermaine, to the GH family. Sadly, the Quartermaine Brunch, a traditional event at the GH Fan Weekend in Studio City, is still canceled.
Look closely at the picture to the left because you'll only see it in Santa Barbara history, not in General Hospital's future. It has finally been confirmed that Lane Davies will exiting the role of Cameron Lewis within the next two months and his romance with Alexis will not be pursued further. It is rumored that Alexis' daughter, Kristina, will end up leaving with Dr Lewis, in his care, when she suspects that Sonny is about to learn that Kristina is his child. No confirmation on this as of yet and there is no trustworthy spoiler information on how Cameron will leave the show. Although one site rumored that the CE (cataclysmic event) that is set to take the life of several Port Charles citizens would be the sinking of the Haunted Star floating casino after a bomb planted by Zander detonates, both Soaptown USA and TVguide.com are saying it's a "towering inferno" story in which the Port Charles Hotel burns that causes the tragedies and evidently, encompasses several days of screen time in the event itself rather than event plus aftermath. I haven't heard anything either way other than rumors, so kudos to the scoopsters who get this one! Regardless, head writer, Bob Guza said in Soap Opera Digest, "We're going to fold every single story into a cataclysmic event...We're going to turn the canvas, literally, upside-down. It's going to be the biggest production thing this show has ever done. Nobody is going to emerge unscathed. A number won't survive. Secrets will be revealed."
[Yes, I changed the picture. When it's 1am
and you've been working on one column for 8 hours
straight, you'd be surprised how much some
pictures of Sarah Brown look like Tamara Braun.
Come on, people... got any heart left in there
anywhere or do you really, really believe in
attacking and bitching just to spread the pain
around??]
Speaking of Nik and his paramour who wasn't at the time, Parade magazine (that's the one that comes with the Sunday newspaper) has some beautiful pictures of ex-Emily, (and now Golden Globe nominee for her hit show "Joan of Arcadia"), Amber Tamblyn, in their "In Step With" column. Click here to get there. It will prompt you to enter your zip code to get you to your local "Parade" magazine, then click on "For more about Amber Tamblyn" in the lower left corner and "Photo Gallery" on the right photo once you're on the next page. That's all of the soap news! If you enjoyed this column and the reviews of the three ABC Daytime Dramas for 2003, please continue making a donation to keep us on the net. You may donate via credit card online by clicking on the PayPal link or find out how to contribute by check, money order, etc. Thanks for thinking of us! Additionally, SOMETHING NEW... I am starting a new business venture that I think might interest some of you who are looking for a way to 1) get fast food, ice cream, restaurant food and other goodies on a "buy one get one free" status, 2) make some extra money for yourself and/or 3) support Eye on Soaps in some way other than a straight out donation. Almost a year ago, my friend, Karen, sent me a wonderful gift by mail. It was a really cool coupon book, NATIONAL, NOT LOCAL (adoing!) called Smart Shoppers. As many of you know, my family has gone through some pretty brutal financial storms in the past couple of years and this book was a godsend. MANY times it allowed Eric to get extra food when he was on the road job hunting or interviewing (two sandwiches instead of one, etc) and also occasionally allowed us to go out on an actual date (buy one get one free meals from Sizzler) or even treat ourselves to a late night delight (buy one get one free sundaes from Baskin Robbins!). No way could we have afforded to do these fun things otherwise, but this little bit of luxury really kept us sane. A couple of weeks ago, Karen poked me from across the country and said, "You know, you should sell those coupon books. I make about two grand a month doing it." (WTF???) She had mentioned it briefly before, but I'm NOT a salesman by nature and I HATE things like MLM's and Tupperware parties and dorky crap like that. She described the process to me, which seemed effortless and by a series of miracles, I was soon on my way to trying it out. So I'm going to give a shot at selling these really great coupon books that I love and use like mad and I am going to pour 50% of all of my profits from these books into the Eye on Soaps expenditure account. Sure, it might end up being nothing, but I figured I could at least give it a shot. This is one of those times when you have to throw caution to the wind and take a chance. Click here if you want more info. I kid you not. These coupons are the most useful $30 you'll ever spend and you save more than that on the first page alone. It's also a wonderful way to make a few bucks here and there (from your home even) if you are looking to fill in some cracks in the budget. Anyway, thanks for letting me bend your ear. Just trying to take advantage of EVERY opportunity to keep this website (and me) afloat. Have wonderful weekend!
