Edmund Grey

1992 to present

Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Edmund Grey arrived in Pine Valley in 1992 for the purpose of covering the "Who Killed Will Cortlandt?" story. He met Brooke English at Tempo magazine, and they fell in love.

Edmund was connected with Dimitri Marick by circumstance – he was supposedly the son of Wildwind maid Flora and gardener Alf Gresham, and grew up in the shadow of Dimitri. He was told that he was, in fact, the son of Hugo Marick’s son, but his obsession with proving this cost him his relationship with Brooke. Helga, Hugo’s housekeeper, finally admitted the truth to him just before plunging to her death off a high wall. Dimitri and Edmund had difficulty reconciling themselves to their new relationship, and at one point Edmund kidnapped Erica in Budapest in order to force Dimitri to recognize him as a Marick. In time, Dimitri did come to terms with his brother, and gave Edmund Wildwind.

Brooke English married Tad Martin 1993, breaking Edmund’s heart. He began to see Dr. Maria Santos, and while she never replaced Brooke in his heart, she fell in love with him and eventually the feeling was reciprocated. They married in 1994, but less than a year later the marriage was challenged when Edmund was the only one who could reach Brooke when her life was threatened by a tubal pregnancy. Edmund took over Tempo from Brooke in 1995, and his marriage to Maria was happy except for the fact that they were having difficulty conceiving a child. Edmund offered Kelsey Jefferson an internship at the magazine in 1996, and the Greys tried to adopt Kelsey’s baby. Kelsey wanted baby Sam returned to her, but Bobby Warner, involved in his own convoluted plot, convinced her to return the baby to the Greys.

Troubles between Maria and Edmund were far from over, though. Maria betrayed Edmund with his brother, Dimitri and Skye Chandler, another woman with a crush on Edmund, doctored Maria's paternity test results and made it appear that Dimitri, not Edmund, was the father of her baby. Erica, married to Dimitri at the time and having recently lost her own baby, was enraged when she found that Dimitri was supposed to be the baby’s father. She confronted Maria at a cabin during an ice storm, and the stress caused Maria to go into labor. Erica was the only one who could save the baby, but en route to the hospital, her car skidded and the baby was supposedly lost in the lake. Erica found a woman, Esther Glynn, who lived next to Willow Lake and had saved the baby from the icy waters, convinced her that the baby belonged to her, and took it away. Erica tried to pass the baby "Sonya" off as an adopted Russian child, but guilt eventually made her admit the truth in 1997. She went to prison for kidnapping and other felonies.

Edmund and Maria, with babies Sam and Maddie, were a happy family for about twenty minutes. On a flight to NY to attend an awards ceremony for Brooke, the plane went down and while Edmund and Maddie were saved, Maria was lost and presumed dead. Edmund had a nervous collapse and nearly lost custody of Maddie, whom Dimitri still believed to be his child. Maddie’s true paternity was proven, however, with help from Gloria Marsh (then Dimitri’s wife), Tad and Erica.

Brooke was in danger from the evil Jim Thomasen, but Edmund revealed his schemes and Jim imprisoned him in an aqueduct. Dimitri somehow perceived that his brother was in trouble and rescued him, after Edmund experienced a ghostly visit from Maria.

In 1998, Edmund befriended the newly arrived Kit Fisher, who turned out to be Jackson’s long lost sister, Christine Montgomery. When Kit claimed that Ryan Lavery had raped her, Edmund came to Kit's defense and supported her throughout her ordeal. Edmund and Kit were never more than friends.

Edmund was shocked to learn that his brother Dimitri was terminally ill, and Alexandra Devane Marick, who claimed to be Dimitri's new wife. Edmund blamed Alex when it appeared that Dimitri had ended his own life by walking into the sea. In time, Edmund came to realize that Alex had been doing her best to follow Dimitri's wishes and they began making tentative steps towards friendship. The friendship deepened to love as Edmund helped Alex unravel the mystery of her past.  He asked her to marry him, and she accepted.

Dimitri turned up alive, however, and Alex returned to her husband.  On the surface, Edmund appears to be handling it well, but underneath a rage seems to be simmering.
